Growing up I had big, unruly curly hair. I watched my mom blow-dry her hair every week at the salon, but I always wore mine in a bun or a braid. I had no clue how to treat it or make it look nice. In my twenties, I followed in the footsteps of my eldest sister and chemically straightened my hair. Suddenly I looked and felt like a movie star!
But the joy didn’t last. Chemically treating my hair smelled awful and made my eyes water. My hair started tearing, and lost its shine and volume. And in my last salon straightening session, looking up at an image of a blonde, straight-haired woman, it dawned on me: I’d got my beauty standards from Barbie.
I knew I needed to go back to natural, but the transition back to curls wasn’t easy. On top of the physical struggle of growing them back, it was an emotional challenge – I needed to recover my confidence and self-worth. In the process, I wasted so much money searching for the right hair products, only to chuck them out shortly after.
